What is Attachment and Why Does it Matter?
Attachment refers to the deep emotional bonds formed between a child and their caregivers, which influence how we relate to others throughout life. From an early age, humans are biologically wired to form these bonds for survival, and the quality of these attachments shapes our emotional experiences, behaviors, and relationships.
The Roots of Attachment
Attachment theory, developed by therapist John Bowlby, explains that babies are born with a natural drive to connect to caregivers to ensure their survival. When caregivers respond consistently and compassionately to their needs, children feel safe and secure, creating a foundation for exploration and growth.
However, when this bond is disrupted—whether due to neglect, trauma, or inconsistent caregiving—the child may develop unhealthy attachment patterns that can carry into adulthood. These early relational experiences form a "blueprint" for how we connect with others, often influencing our relationships unconsciously.
Attachment and Adult Relationships
In adulthood, these attachment patterns affect how we handle intimacy, trust, and communication in relationships. From avoiding intimacy altogether to anxiously seeking reassurance, our attachment styles can create challenges and misunderstandings. Fortunately, attachment is not fixed. With awareness and healing, it’s possible to rewrite this blueprint and create healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
What You Will Learn and Experience at the Retreat
This retreat is designed to help you explore your attachment style, heal relational wounds, and build stronger, more secure connections with yourself and others. Through a combination of group work and guided practices, we will work to release the impact of early trauma, build resilience, and help you feel more grounded in your relationships.
During the Retreat, You Will:
Understand Your Attachment Style: Gain insights into your own attachment patterns and how they affect your relationships.
Heal Childhood Wounds: Through corrective experiences and somatic practices, you will address childhood wounds and restore safety and trust.
Transform Relationship Patterns: Learn new ways of relating to yourself and others, breaking free from unhealthy cycles.
Strengthen Emotional Resilience: Develop greater capacity for emotional regulation, joy, and fulfillment in your relationships.
Build Connection: Learn how to communicate more effectively and empathically, leading to deeper, more authentic connections.
Heal Family Patterns: Recognize how trauma and resilience can be passed down through generations and learn to shift those patterns.
The Four Attachment Styles: How They Show Up in Adulthood
Understanding your attachment style is crucial to healing and growth. Here's a quick overview of the four main attachment styles and how they may appear in adulthood:
Secure Attachment
Trusting, compassionate, and open to intimacy.
Seeks and provides emotional support and healthy connection.
Avoidant Attachment
May avoid closeness, struggle with emotional intimacy, or fear vulnerability.
Tends to keep a distance in relationships, often feeling uncomfortable with dependence.
Ambivalent (Preoccupied) Attachment
Longing for intimacy but often anxious that others won't meet their needs.
May exhibit clingy or needy behavior and fear rejection or abandonment.
Disorganized (Unresolved Trauma) Attachment
Often rooted in past trauma, this style may create confusion and distrust in relationships.
May have a deep fear of getting hurt and struggle to feel worthy of love and care.
This retreat will help you understand these patterns and learn tools to heal and transform them.
Healing, Growth, and Connection
The Hope of Healing
The good news is that we are all capable of healing our attachment wounds. Neuroscience shows that the brain is naturally plastic, meaning it can change and adapt throughout life. Through the right support, guidance, and practices, you can move towards a more secure attachment style and experience greater intimacy, trust, and joy in your relationships.
Why Now?
Trauma, relational wounds, and early attachment injuries may have shaped your life, but they do not have to define your future. This retreat provides an opportunity to start a journey toward healing—one that empowers you to build stronger, more authentic relationships with yourself and those you care about.
A Healing Approach: DARe and Somatic Practices
Throughout the retreat, you will be guided by experts in Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience (DARe) and Somatic Experiencing (SE), two powerful, evidence-based approaches that promote healing from attachment injuries. Dr. Diane Poole Heller, a leading expert in attachment healing, and her team of practitioners will support your transformation through:
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™): A body-focused approach that helps release trauma stored in the nervous system.
DARe (Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience): A method for healing attachment wounds through safe, corrective relational experiences.
Small Group Sessions: Personalized support to help you integrate and heal your attachment patterns.
Additional Retreat Offerings:
Daily integration sessions and Q&A on secure attachment skills.
On-site small group work with experienced SE & DARe practitioners.
Healing movement, yoga, resource integration, and meditation.
Opportunities to reconnect with nature and yourself through mindful exploration.

Barbara Collier, BSN, LPC, SEP
Barbara Collier is a highly experienced somatic trauma psychotherapist, certified Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) Practitioner, and certified Embodied Psychosexual Practitioner (EPSP™), dedicated to guiding individuals, families, and children toward trauma recovery support and self-discovery. With a compassionate and integrative approach, Barbara addresses the complexities of developmental, intergenerational, sexual, and social/historical trauma. Her expertise also extends to integrative touch and movement therapies, where she supports both humans - and whenever possible and appropriate - alongside the wisdom of animals, with a focus on complex physical health conditions and chronic pain.
Barbara is the co-founder of Equinimity Tucson, a nonprofit organization providing somatically based, trauma-informed services to underserved populations. As a group facilitator, she brings a unique blend of her background as an ICU nurse and her extensive specialization in trauma-informed care. Her calm, grounded presence is a hallmark of her work, enabling her to hold space for touching deeply sensitive, personal material and supporting transformative group experiences.
In addition to her clinical practice, Barbara has had the privilege of co-teaching and assisting alongside Dr. Peter A. Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing, on multiple occasions. She also served as an assistant in Somatic Experiencing International core training programs.
Barbara’s personal journey with sexual trauma recovery is deeply woven into her professional calling. She comes from a lineage of intergenerational and ancestral wounds—stories long buried, spoken only in whispers. Growing up neurodivergent, she often felt overwhelmed, masking her true self in search of safety. At 16 years of age, she left her home due to abuse, hoping to leave the pain behind and create a new life. Yet, as so many discover, leaving a place does not mean leaving the wounds—and often, the cycle continues.
For years, Barbara has dedicated herself to gathering the fragmented pieces of her soul—those she once believed were broken, lost, or beyond reach. Slowly, she came to realize that these pieces had always been within her. Her journey has been one of remembering: uncovering the inherent wholeness that exists in each of us, even amidst unspeakable trauma. She has lovingly turned toward the marginalized and exiled parts of herself, inviting them home with patience and care.
Barbara’s diligent work and life journey brought her to a new edge: the shift from merely surviving to truly thriving. After lovingly parting ways with her partner of 25 years, she embarked on a deeper dive into sexual trauma recovery. This phase of her journey has included intensive work with somatic sex educators and practitioners, cultivating an even more attuned and compassionate relationship with herself. Through this process, she embraces the fullness of her vitality and reclaims her sexual sovereignty.
Barbara’s connection to nature and animals has been a vital part of her wholeness. The natural world became a profound teacher, offering her a deep sense of belonging that is tangible, repeatable, and joyful. She believes that “the original relational wounding” stems from the separation of humans from nature, and by extension, from their own bodies and inherent wholeness.
Barbara is guided by the belief that there is a profound wholeness within every being—a vast, interconnected wisdom and aliveness that is always present, even in the face of trauma. In this wholeness lies the potential for reconnection, and sovereignty.

Important Information about the Imiloa Campus
Being in the Savegre mountains, our retreat offers a chance to explore the rugged terrain while immersing yourself in nature. Expect to navigate jungle paths with varying inclines, stairs, rocks, and exposed tree roots. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes like sneakers or strapped footwear for stability (such as Chacos, Keens or Tevas). While the trails accommodate a variety of fitness levels, a basic level of physical capability is advisable to fully enjoy the experience. Since we’ll be staying at a retreat center with indoor/outdoor elements, expect to be exposed to nature (including winds, geckos, lizards, and jungle bugs), as well as the sounds of monkeys, tropical birds, and cicadas.
Imiloa Gourmet Plant-Based Cuisine
Imiloa proudly serves conscious comfort food—healthy, locally sourced, gourmet vegan meals that are artistically plated, scientifically nourishing, and delightfully crafted for all of its retreat guests.
Daily Gourmet Meals at family tables in an open-air setting: Organic, plant-based meals crafted by a 5-star chef, with a nightly four-course dinner.
Fresh organic tea from the garden, local coffee, energizing snacks, and fruit throughout the day.
Water is UV triple-filtered from their mountain’s well and perfectly healthy and safe to drink from all faucets on the property.

During registration, there is an opportunity to indicate meal allergies and preferences.
A special wristband indicating food allergies or modified food needs will be provided.
Eighty percent of guests report eating some animal product before arriving at Imiloa. On their guest surveys, one hundred percent rate their plant-based culinary experience at either 4.9 or 5.0 stars.
