What is Healing Informed Somatic Education?
The difference between being trauma-informed and healing-informed is subtle but significant—it's the shift from awareness to transformation, from surviving to thriving.
Healing-informed care invites us not just to manage trauma, but to transform it. It’s not about returning to who we were before the rupture, but becoming more fully who we are—rooted, connected, and alive.
Trauma-Informed: Awareness & Safety
Being trauma-informed means understanding how trauma impacts the nervous system, behavior, and relationships. It’s rooted in principles like safety, choice, trust, and empowerment. A trauma-informed lens recognizes signs of trauma and works to avoid re-traumatization. It’s about creating environments where people feel safe enough to begin the work of healing.
This approach is essential—it helps providers, educators, and caregivers meet others with compassion and sensitivity. But being trauma-informed alone can sometimes stop at the level of caution. It knows what not to do, but doesn’t always offer a clear path forward.
Healing-Informed: Transformation & Reconnection
Being healing-informed goes deeper. It doesn’t just ask, “What happened to you?” but also, “What’s possible for you now?” A healing-informed approach acknowledges trauma but doesn’t define a person by it. It centers not only on regulation and safety, but on growth, reconnection, and the reclamation of wholeness.
Healing-informed care brings in embodiment, creativity, relationship, and meaning-making. It trusts in the body’s innate capacity to reorganize and heal. It values pleasure, expression, joy, and awe—not as luxuries, but as essential parts of becoming whole again.
Trauma- and Healing-Informed Somatic Education is an approach to learning, growth, and embodiment that integrates an understanding of how trauma impacts the nervous system with a commitment to cultivating wholeness, resilience, and aliveness through the body.
It’s not just about what we teach, but how we teach—honoring the body as both a site of memory and a powerful source of transformation.
At its heart, trauma- and healing-informed somatic education is about helping people come home to their bodies—not as something to fix, but as something to listen to, trust, and honor. It’s where education becomes not just informative, but transformative.
Our somatic healing principles are rooted in Somatic Experiencing®, developed by Peter A Levine, PhD.
